How much of a PITA is it to change the rear main seal on one of these? A friend of mine noticed his was leaking. It apparently died or came out because the oil is a steady drip now.
The car has 120k on it and it's his commuter.

If it's too much of a PITA to do he'll probably ditch the car and drive his Mustang or F150.

Changing the seal is a 2 minute deal.
Its taking the tranny out that slows you down...

I haven't looked at the car. Does the trans need to come down or can you separate it from the engine far enough to do the job?

What we used to do (with a lift of course) was get every thing off and loosened up(pull battery and filter etc IIRC) and lower the lift with a rolling table underneath and just shake it out. Lift it up, slap a seal in it(they sometimes just blow right out) set er back down, line the trans up , couple of bolts, and finish installing.

I just had one apart for the front and rear crank seals, when I got the timing cover off I found that the crank was walking and letting the timing gear eat into the oil pump, I think spec is around .015" max and this one had around .150" endplay.

My only thought is make sure it is not the head gasket.

Also the oil pressure senders are notorious for leakage. Just check it over yourself before you pull the trans on someone elses diagnosis!

Not a chance of hell. I'm helping a co-worker do one on his vehicle right now. That engine bay is so friggin tight there's no way to do the rear main without either pulling the engine or the trans. I just decided to pull the engine so we could do the water pump, cam seals and timing belt while we're at it. It's a b!tch of a job and if I would have known, I would have just told him to scrap the car!
