Yeah this is strange that it only acts up in that narrow rpm range. I wouldn't think it'd have a severe drop in psi just in that range. Does it sound like classic lifter clattering from low psi or a different arm/shaft noise or can you tell

Noise sounds like rocker arm clatter, oil pressure stays strong and if you hold it in that range for any length of time the noise stays the same. The oil looks clean as does the oil laying in the heads when the covers are off. I have tried different oils 20-50 originally and recently changed to 10-30 to see if that would change the noise, which it didn't. Oil pressure is high and this motor has no more then 500 miles on it since a complete rebuild, may go to a hydraulic roller if I can't figure this out, hate the thought of that expense this winter but would like to try and keep this cam if I can get it quieted down since it works so well, thing sounds like a diesel in that bad range.

I wonder if it could be as simple as a bad lifter(s) and breaking in a new set would be the ans? If so it'd sure be the cheapest way to go. Holler how it turns out & good luck

Due to ramp design on some of the new cam profiles there seems to be some 'noise' or periods of noise. If it runs good leave it alone.
Every Comp cam or MP cam I've ever used had that "clatter" in that exact RPM range. Personally, you are NOT going to get rid of it. Like said...it runs fine & you know the lifters are preloaded.....Drive it!!!!

I have exactly the same problem with a Crane in mine. It doesn't seem to noticably affect performance, just very annoying. Switched rockers from H.S. to Isky Iron. No difference. Tried all different preloads. No difference. Tried different length pushrods. No difference. Looked to see if rockers were hitting valve covers. Nope. Thought maybe what I really had was a header leak so I changed to Remflex gaskets. No difference. I give up. I'll put a solid in it before I try anything else. Then it will make less noise and have more power. Perfect.
In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

Yes and no. In order to make more power you will need to go bigger with the solid cam. IE: a MP 528 is actually a lesser/milder cam that the 509. Have to take the lash numbers off the solid cam to get effective numbers. Been down that road.

Guys! Its spark knock. This sound fooled me when I was a younger man. Try ta back off your timing, see if it changes.
That sounds like something to check .
What is intial timing , total timing , all in by , and do you have your vac. adv. connected?
What pistons are you running with those open chamber ebrocks , what is your compression ratio ?
And someone asked , what rockers ?

If it does it when the car is not in gear, it is most likely not detonation as there is not enuf to load on the engine to generate the heat required. If you have a vacuum advance disconnect it and see if it then goes away.
