Hi,

Im in the process of the rebuilding of the individual components of my 72 Chrysler 727 torqueflite.

I have installed new clutches and plates in the front clutch drum. the factory allowed tolerance between the pressure plate and snap ring is between .088 to .145 with a 4 disc setup on a 440 4 bbl. My best measurement with me pushing the snap ring down is .158 to .168 leaving it alone and finding the lowest spot under the "wave" as the books say.

I've replaced the 9 factory clutch piston springs with new OEM ones and a new retainer, new seals on the piston and the piston is bottomed out in the bore as instructed in the factory manual and the handbook, as well, I have installed 4 new clutch discs and metal plates in and put the original pressure plate & snap ring back in.

i have read about a thicker snap rings, is this a viable option? THis is my first trans rebuild, i'm super confident since I'm using the A 727 Torqueflite rebuild handbook available everywhere online and in stores, and would like to move on to the rear clutch pack and ut this to bed. I've come across no issues whatsoever so far.

ANY help would be appreciated.

Best,
Derek

That's easy to deal with. You can either use a thicker snap ring, called selective snap ring, or you can buy thicker steels. The rings come in many different thicknesses.

Do your best to get it near the lower limit. It will thank you for your effort!
you can get thicker clutches, thicker steels, selective snap rings. You are at the point of adding another clutch pair, to take up the clearance.

The best way I have found to check the clutch clearances is to place the pump housing ontop of an old coffee can, then install the front clutch assembly in the pump. Set up a dial indicator to measure the distance the clutch pack moves when applying air pressure to the clutch port hole in the pump. The pressure test makes sure the seals are installed correctly too.

Anyhow, the correct way to change the clearance is to use a thicker snap ring. Usually these are flat, not wavy.
If your snap ring is already on the thick side, you may be able to install an extra steel, and a thinner snap ring?

A&A trans sells a kit of 6-snap rings for $37.50, but I would check with a local trans shop.
Last time I did this the trans shop gave me a box of snap rings to sort through. I brought my dial calipers so I could measure them.
