Hello all, is there a general safe cam lift size for a standard 440 with 906 heads?

I know it's best to measure but I am just wondering what the max lift is for most stock pistons and valve springs.

Thanks.

I would think that a .509 cam would be the max id go on a stock set of 906 springs ,as long as they were dual.

MP's .528 mechanical works perfect in a relatively stock 440 with headers and intake.

Keep in mind lash will take up some of that lift #.

With higher lift cams, always check valve guide top to valve spring retainer clearance. Dump the stock, tired springs and get fresh ones recommended by the cam grinder. If the heads and block are not milled, almost any flat tappet cam will darn near fit, piston to valve clearance wise. But always check it. My 69' 440-6 pac stocker motor, with pistons 0.029 in the hole, 0.021 gasket and milled heads to cc at 80, can handle "stocker" cams with 260ish at 0.050 duration. Its very tight, but it can fit. Its the duration that will smash the valves into the pistons.

.500 is about max.I ran a .500 solid for years in my 440 with stock pistons.I put a .520 solid in and it was alright as long as you didnt rev it high.Bent some push rods on a 6300 rev running it though. Now with my Ross domes it shifts at 6800 with a .588 solid.Rocky
