I am updating my dual point distributor in my 70 TA with an electronic unit. Do I need to change my ballast resisitor or my electronic regulator as well?

Thanks

You need the electronic box (orange or chrome depending on your set-up), the wiring harness, and the dist. to switch over.

Your (electronic) reg can stay. Many ways to go. could get a JY dizzy (B or RB) for cheap & the wear is negligible and a parts house 4 pin ECU (they're good/cheap) such as an AutoZone borg warner CBE142 or others & dont wast your $$$ on a MP chrome one and the orange MP ones (can) have issues. That only leaves the coil and the ballast & many options there & can go with a full 12V coil and no ballast probably an E coil. I'd google it & read up. Alot of gain will be from tuning the subsystems in the dist (initial/total/springs/vac adv) in order one at a time. Some ECU's reportedly increase dwell but the main power is in the coil/ballast choice. EDIT missed the 340 part, of course you'd want a SB electronic 70's 318/360 JY dizzy & take it apart & clean/lube/toss the heavy spring with the long loop & sub in a mr gasket or MP light one keeping the other OE light spring

Im replacing my original dual point distributor with a new Mopar electronic distributor complete with orange box and new electronic ignition engine harness. Wasnt sure if i ucan use the same ballast resistor and original electronic voltage reg. Some said they thought i need to cahnge the voltage reg as well.

a new orange box does not require a balast resistor. older ones did. what RR is saying is if your coil is a 'true' 12 volt coil you don't need a ballast. most stock style over the counter coils are not true 12 volts and do require one. ask when you buy it. as far as the regulator, as long as it is an electronic regulator you should be ok.

Actually you can keep your current coil and ballast. I would highly suggest NOT to get an orange box but a generic parts house Mopar 4 pin ECU. Wire up the ECU harness/bolt on the ECU/install dist/time it & you'll be up and running strong in no time and you can make a spot on coil/ballast combo (or coil/no ballast combo) later if desired. Myself I'd get an E coil (no ballast-full 12V) coil.

Thanks for the info. Its a "new" orange box, but I still have the original coil. So based upon that, I need the ballast resisitor? Unless I get a "new" 12V (100% 12 v) coil.

What is a "e-coil" and where do I get it?

cutesie name for an epoxy coil. available at any local parts store. then no ballast required.

Correct and the prob is the "new" orange boxes have alot of (reported) issues but since we're (pretty much) a problem solving site here we get the bad news alot more than the occaisional Kudos but there has been alot of failures wih the new ones. Do ya feel lucky? Well do ya

sounds like the best approach. Get an ecoil (dizzy!) and eliminate the ballast resistor and stock coil all together. Should the spring be changed in the distributor? notacible difference?

I can return the ornage box to my supplier. What do you suggest for an ECU then?

again, any Mopar ECU from your favorite parts store. and a dizzy is NOT an e-coil.

Thanks. I feel educated! Dizzy=distributor.

(1) definitely do (2) a 4 pin ECU from your parts house, dont matter what brand just have them find/pull a 4 pinner (they're cheap) & you're set. It'll be for a 70's Mopar just not sure what year(s) to ask for
