I built a 10.5:1 360 with purple shaft cam and a 727 transmission. I had the idea of using a 440 converter and removing the weights. I used the B&M flexplate.

The problem is that it runs great but when you put it in gear. it loads the engine something terrible and it kills the engine.

Input?

Sounds like the stall isnt high enough for the engine to idle properly.

try the other way around, use a slant or a a Simca 4 banger convertor (poor examples, but the theory is sane) Smaller convertors usually run higher stalls behind a stronger motor.

Thats what I was thinking. Cam is part no. P4120233 and I know I have seen a stall recommendation chart somewhere but I can't find it.

I am thinking around 2600??

The stock 340 spec converter was 2200 rpms, and that was with a less agressive cam than most aftermarket sticks. A good name brand converter will react below the stall rating. Using a 2800 stall in your application may be more beneficial.

That cam really wants a good converter to shine. Any factory converter is a POS and should be put in the nearest trash bin. Call Lane or Kenny @PTCrace.com and get something that will wake that 360 up.I've run the same combo with several converters and the difference is amazing. If your running a 904 trans I can help in the trans for sale area.

FWIW there is a brand new TCI 10" in the swap area right now, just a little to loose for me, but it might be just the ticket for you....

I had the same problem when I first put the 72 together and thought the same as you, the converter.

As it turned out, a little adjusting of the 4 corner idle screws was all it needed

Your tuneup is the problem, not the converter.

Remember, the Mopars with the most radical cams ever from the factory also had the tightest converters ever and they idled in gear just fine.

Had to look up the PN. The old 292 509 cam. You need a 3500+.
