I got one of these cams in a rebuilt motor I recently bought. I'm thinking about putting it in my mild 383. Would this be streetable in 3500lb car with a 727 and 3.55 suregrip. I'm about to have a torque ordered so I want to finalize my cam choice. It currently has a comp cams 268H.

Here are the spce on the Elgin cam.

Range Part Number
C E-1222-P
Direction Cam Lift Valve Lift Adv. Dur Dur
INT 0.311 0.466 298 224 deg
Exh 0.325 0.487 303 234 deg

Here is a link to the specs for the current cam.

i looked at those elgin cams and i think they are the same as the big summit cam. i think that paticular grind has been used by different vendors, crane, elgin, clevite. there are some very slight differences in rating between the vendors but once you read thru the "smoke" the same details pop up. i think clevite offers a version with 112 lobe seperation which is a little differnt from normal 114lsa.

Thanks for the info. Does anyone have any experience with this cam or the Summit 6401 cam? I don't want to swap the existing cam unless it's really worth it, or I know what to expect.

One more question. would this cam like this be a direct swap or would I need new springs, etc

I think you'll find the Elgin or whoever cam doesn't help your 383 unless you go up a step in converter stall speed. I can't comment on the lobes themselves other than they're ALL Chevy lobes and are relatively old and lazy.

Keep the 268H and sell the "big summit" cam to someone who wants it.

R.
