Pull the transfer case off first, you'll need to unbolt the trans mount so you can lower the trans some to get at the top bolts , use a stubby gear wrench to get at them.

Not sure if you have to do this on a 97 but my 2000 I needed to spread the frame some to get the crossmember out , you might be able to hammer on it to get it out but you won't get it back in .

I will take a look at things tomorrow and see what all I need to do. Hopefully that crossmember isn't too much of an issue...

You can make a cheapie frame spreader out of a 2X4. Cut it about a 1/4" longer than the inside truck frame measurement. Put one end in and drive the other end in with a BFH.

the transmission support does not have to be hammered out----it is made in a wedge shape so it will sit there without any bolts in it---you are supposed to slide it straight to the rear---if you look at it from the rear you can see how simple it is----of course the weight of the transmission must be off the brace before you can move it----- and if you do hammer or pry it out it will get a slight bend in it and you will wonder why the bolt holes arent lining up---but feel free to Q and A here someone may tell you just drill the holes bigger----bob

Agreed,,,
Having done hundreds of transmissions in Ram trucks - a porta-power was the best tool I ever bought

It's supposed to slide up and then out the back,,, yea good luck with that

Ya no kidding , I spent 10 months R+Ring transmissions on trucks with hopped up Cummins' there wasn't one that just lifted up and came out. I made a spreader out of a bottle jack and some scrap steel because I was too cheap to buy a porta power for home use , the guy I worked with had one for the shop we worked out of.

Trans Jack...You need it!

These things are pretty heavy and if you think you're gonna just catch it when it drops like a powerglide, or a 904, you're wrong.

Man I ain't lyin!!!
Be safe!
