In all my years of owning Mopars I have never had a water pump problem so I have a question. The water pump on my 340 is leaking from underneath the pump. I haven't had a chance to crawl underneath the car yet to see if is obvious where the leak is coming from or not. What I would like to know is, would a bad pump leak or is it more likely just the gasket is bad? Being a water pump is a pretty simple device, when they go bad what usually goes wrong with them?

It could be the gasket, but usually a leak from underneath is from the weep hole, telling you it's time to change it...seals inside go bad eventually...

You can see the hole in the picture..

They leak out a small hole made for the purpose on the bottom. You need a new one.

Personally, even if it were just the gasket, I wouldn't go thru the labor of removing everything and cleaning up the surfaces to put on the same pump with a new gasket.

and a bad seal that's leaking sometimes the weep hole will leak but not every time it is driven, that drove me bats for awhile on one case but pumping it up to 15 w the rad pump DID make it leak. Changed it out/all good

BE CAREFUL of a weep-hole leak. I just picked up a vehicle that had a slow leak that turned into a big one ... that FRIED the motor.
