Found an old dodge truck for parts with a Dana in the rear but I'm not sure if it's a dana 60 or maybe a dana 70? How do I tell?

Just look for the '60' or '70' cast into the webbing I believe.

Spot #3 in the picture.

The Dana 60 & 70 use the same cover, but you'll know a 70 when you SEE IT!...Think Dana 60 on steriods ....there's also a Dana 60M that's found under some 3/4 Dodge trucks also

here's a Dana 60

Okay well it looks like it's the D70 then. It's got the beefier looking rear housing like the D70 in the pic above.

Is it worth using a Dana 70 in a car like mine? I've got a stock untouched 9.25 in there now and I'm building a 500-550hp 440 with a manual trans. I was thinking of buying a detroit locker for my 9.25, new rear gears and probably new axles, but I can get this D70 for $100, mod it then swap it in when I have it ready to go. Is it worth it in terms of strength and weight over my 9.25?

Nope: You want a D60 not a 70. The aftermarket makes everything you need for a 60 in a car and you'll never kill it. The 70 is just more weight for nothing. And I wouldn't recommend spending any money on a 9.25 either. Spend it once on a D60 and be done with it. D60's are very easy and cheap to find.

for $100 I would consider buying that D70 if it's serviceable, still plenty of 1st gen cummins guys who like to do that upgrade! You should be able to flip it.

You can put the 70 gears in a 60 housing and make it industructable. Tim

There's also something called a Dana60-HD.
It has a 'double' rib around the rearcover. Here's a pic;

The dana 70 can be used in a car but they are a lot heavier than you would think. The later(not sure which years to start with, pull one of the axle to see if yours has them or not)Dana 70 had 35 spline axles stock and there are two differrent width carriers in them with two different gear sets, ring gear offset, not like the Dana 60 with 4.56 and above and so on )I had one cut down in a 1963 Belevdere bracket car with 5.13 gears in it, I switch it over to a used 8 3/4 for one race (I broke the 8 3/4 in three runs ) with 4.89 ratio and the car pick up almost a full second Lots of unsprung weight differences between the two I wouldn't do another Dana 70 now for a bracket car or street car, especially not with under 800 HP buy it and swap or turn it and use the money towards a Dana 60

Carl Jantz came up with a different bearing setup, clearance the housing and install. Do a search under jana 76....Tim
