As posted elsewhere, I have to replace my leakey fuel tank and want to get rid of my noisey Holly elect pump while I'm at it. Now I'm considering going to a mechanical for ease and quiet... I have a 500" RB in a '68 Charger that is street driven w/ an 870 Holly and 3/8" fuel line and I don't want to lean out when I'm at full throttle. Am looking at a Carter M4862 as well as an Edelbrock EDE-1723. Mancini claims the EBrock pump will support 600 HP, but haven't heard much about it.
Anyone have experience with either or have advice on something else?
Thanks!

don't FAST cars run mech pumps? Not sure if those will but there is a mech pump that will I'm sure.

I have use used both mechanical pumps on a 470 with a 1/2" line and 825 Demon. I've run this on the strip and never experience any fuel delivery issues. I upgraded to the Edelbrock due to the larger size fittings (1/4 NPT vs 3/8" NPT) found on the Eddy pump.

I Use the Carter 4682 Street / Strip pump drawing through the stock 3/8" line on my 452 in my Satellite. It feeds an 830 DP and I spin the motor to 6500. Car runs 12.0's. While I don't have a visible fuel pressure guage, I've never experienced anything that leads me to believe I'm outrunning the pump. Car runs 112.9 mph, which seems in line with my E.T.

i've tested both those pumps for pressure and free flow. the carter4862 would pump almost a gallon in 30 seconds and had 9psi. the edelbrock pumped 3/4 gallon in 1 minute with eratic pressure. if i had a thirsty motor the 4862 would be my 1st choice, but the 4862 needs some mods.

Why not keep the electric that you know will feed the engine, just put it on a micro switch on the secondaries. Run most any mechanical that you want. That is the way I run my Cuda. Takes all the guess work out of the mechanical pump.

Thanks guys,,, good info here!
I was kinda leaning to the Eddy just because of the fitting sizes as well as the 1/4 seemed to choke down the 3/8 line and defeat the purpose, but I guess it's the actual fuel delivery to the carb that counts....as mentioned in one of the replies about "mods needed" for the 4862, what is needed?

3/8 pipe vs 1/4 pipe is irrelavant. both have i.d. sizes larger than 3/8 tube or -6 hose i.d.'s. the bottom bowl of the 4892 needs to come off and the inlet passage needs to be drilled to 5/16". radius and deburr all inlets and outlets. its pretty simmple to do.

They drill them to open them up for more flow. I am going to run a race pumps piston pump. More change$ but it will fit my mega block. Tim

the carter and edelbrock (i believe these are made by carter) are 3 piece. the top holds the pump arm, spring, and diaphragm. the center piece has the valves and the bottom bowl is for inlet. the inlet passage in the bottom bowl is 1/4' i.d. and needs to be opened up to 5/15" to match the inlet fuel line. the edelbrock pump has this modification but uses a weaker diaphragm spring and has less pressure and volume. the pump needs to be disassembled to do the mods but its not difficult. i can be pm'ed if help is needed.

Stay away from the carter. My self and others have had problems with them stop working. Mine had less than 2000 miles on it before it went.

I have a Clay Smith fuel pump on my 505 RB. It has 1/2" inlet and outlet. In the past you have some grind the pump to clear the block but it looks like they do that for you now. If you notice they have milled a flat spot on the block side of the pump. You will need to run a regulator with this pump. I doubt you will lean out with this pump.

I agree we had 4 bad Cartes in a row.One lasted abot a week before the arm screwed up and the spring dropped in the pan.One wouldnt even pum right out of the box.Installed Holleys on all 3 motors and no problems.Mine feeds my 440 with a 1050 Dominator and has plenty of fuel.Been at least 7 years since they were installed and still going strong.Rocky
