I install the cap auto tubular k member and rack n pionon....if u go with the coil overs u will need to build a suitable shock support since now it bears all the weight, if u chose to run a torsion bar still a shock mount is not required...also rms unit is all in one unit not requiring an welding for a mount, but is a bit heaver,,,unit... give ray at cap a call248 200-8818 he can address any of your question..

If this is a race only car and the rules allow it why not bite the bullet and jump to a strut front end. Very simple and very light.
So how much weight can one be saving by converting over to a strut front end over a torsion bar setup?

I didn't weigh the stuff I took out of my car but I would think it's got to be at least 150 pounds, maybe more.

Well you can ax the K frame, how heavy is that thing? The lower control arms, and torsion bars have to be at least 50 to 75 pounds, stock brakes and spindles, the upper arms don't weigh much but if it's a P/S car there goes a bunch more. The Strange struts don't weigh much at all, neither does a Pinto rack and the CM control arms weigh next to nothing.

Cool I'll be watching this post for further info on this as I'm also considering upgrading to a tubular front.....

You can ditch a large amount of weight by trimming the K like the SS/HA cars and going to coil overs. There nothing lighter than factory A arms. What it really needs and is seldom done is to change the upper A arm attachment points,. This corrects the geometry and keeps the wheels straight thruout their travel. In my opinion the factory had it right when they did the early pro stockers like mine. They used coil overs , a light tube replacing the K and added a Pinto rack. All else are factory parts just reposition. It still works fine 35 years later on my car at 158 mph .

seen alot of issues comming from broken tubulars now that they getting out there more, there is 0 wieght loss going to them, i really think most are just going for the look rather than any actual gain,
at times old can still be better. I don't ike any aftermarket units with the lower A arms using two inside mounting points. overkill for a drag car.
A strut front end is why better and ALOT lighter... they all have 2 points weather its the single inner pivot and a brake reaction rod or 2 inner pivots... a Strange strut package(struts, hubs and brakes) is right at $2000 and you still need a rack... speed cost

There is not 150lbs to loose up front. Total wieght of all stock parts isw 123lbs. Here is the list, idler arm 2lbs stock kframe 37lbs. upper arms with b joint5lbs ea. lowerc arms 9 lbs ea. strut arms 1 lb ea. lower ball joint 3 lbs ea. tie rods 1 lb ea. t bars 7lbs ea. spindle 5 lbs ea. manual gear box 13 lbs. pitman arm 2 lbs. center link 5 lbs. total 123 lbs. The only savings when changing over is k frame is lighter upper are heavier lowers are the same a wash from t bars to coil overs. you do gain some header clearence and are able to adjust caster more. When putting in rack and pinion bumpstear is a pain to work out. Jake
