Has anyone got a good systems for cleaning slotted exhaust tips, like a wheel spray where the soot just washes off?

I can't find a good brush small enough to get in there and dread the thought of using a Q-tip or stuffing a small rag in.

Thanks.

I think I tried everything on my GTXs tips. I kept tapered strips of cloth with a short wire twisted on one end that I could fish through the slots. It was a ton of trouble and they always got dark from the heat anyway.

What I ended up doing was keeping a new set of tips in the trunk and swapping them for the drivers at the show. A lot of trouble too, I know. But they always looked great and got a lot of peoples attention.

I often clean mine with Spray Nine cleaner. I know getting a rag in the slots is difficult, but the cleaner does a decent job.

Are the tips removable or are they welded on? Now follow me here, if they are removable try a dishwasher. They work great for cleaning everything. I did it to a dirty intake and it came out sparkling clean. I know it sounds crazy but it works

For the absolute best powder coating go to J.I.T powder coating, contact infomation is in my personal profile..

No, they're welded on, brand new tips, sooty after a 50 mile drive home. What a dumb design. You'd figure they'd be made so there was no gap for the soot to get into from the inside. I just can't believe the soot is coming back in through the slots after coming out the end.

Sounds like you might have to cut them off, weld the gap up and re-install.

Otherwise, you will be fussing around with them every time you drive the car. That'll get old in a hurry.

It's probably why they changed to black inserts later. They're going to get black anyway. There was a guy out here with a GTX that he would switch out the tips at shows so they always looked nice on display.

IMHO you will never keep them presentable if you drive the car very much at all.

I used hi temp silicone on the inside of the tip where it meets the fluted part , I now clean them half as much , but its an never ending battle .

Im bumping this ancient thread because I still haven't found a solution and am hoping someone might know of a slotted tip tool/trick.

So far Im using Orange Cleaner and stuffing a rag by hand in each slot.

I re-worked mine...

Made a 'new' insert out of aluminized...

Eliminated the 'flange'...

Taped-off the slots(after re-chroming)and sprayed the insert with engine paint...

They've been on 20 years and still look new...

I just hose 'em down when I wash the car...

You're fighting a losing battle with the original design...

Shame you can't powder coat them, washes right off powder coating.

I would suggest windex or simple green. Depending on how dirty they are a tooth brush may come in handy. Simple green is an awesome mild cleaner.

A tooth brush cant come close to getting in there.

I like the idea of powder coating or reworking them. There's a new product for someone to market.

This is what I ended up doing..You can only fight the losing battle for so long...But I still use a small, bendable gun bore brush to clean through the slots..

I'd like to find a REAL GOOD RED PAINT able to hold the heat and fumes and not get burnt.

two sets I have bought ( one piece of $**T from ebay, and the other ones from PG Classic ), no one has hold the heat
