Think I might have a loose eccentric on my 340. No fuel being pumped to carb. Replaced fuel pump and filter still same problem. How common is this? Also shouldn't I just have to remove the timming cover to get at it? Thanks in advance for any advice.

that would make one hell of a racket if it was loose. Try to blow air in fuel line back to tank. maybe strainer in tank is plugged or fuel filter is plugged. If it was loose, the cam sprocket would be loose on the cam, your cam would be walking all over the place, etc. Its a lot of work to check that. Try pumping fuel out of a gas can connected by rubber hose to your pump

Sometimes the eccentric can go south, just make sure you don't have a suction/ feed problem in the tank or line, before you open up the motor?.....if it's the eccentric, better hope it's not the bolt holding it in is the culprit!....because the bolt holds the washer, that holds the eccentric, that holds the upper timing gear on!.....I wouldn.t run it till I opened up the motor,.....you'll have to pull the water pump, the crank dampner, to get the timing chain cover off......good time to put a gear drive, or new double roller timing chain on, and new water pump,.....you know Murphys Law!...the pump or chain will go after you fix the eccentric!.......been there, done that....to many times!.....good luck

Don,.....ya would think it would cause a lot of noise,...but I had an eccentric that the center got all busted up on, still stayed on the motor, the bolt was tight, the eccentric relocated itself centered, instead of offset, the pump didn't work, felt the eccentric inside the pump hole, everything felt fine....drove me nuts for 2 days playing with the whole fuel system, before I tore the front end of the motor off!....I hope our friend here has exhausted all other avenues of fuel starvation before resorting to the eccentric......just diconnect the rubber inlet from the pump inlet and put it in a small can of fuel, and disconnect the outlet from the pump, and crank the car over, if you can pump gas from the can, out the exit of the pump,....start looking at suction blockage, needle seat, stuck float......otherwise if no fuel on this test,......the eccentric is your culprit!

I had the bolt come loose on mine and it did the same thing. No noise at all. I replaced the fuel pump etc. and finally pulled the fuel pump out and
watched the eccentric basically free wheeling. Pull the fuel pump and look inside when you crank the engine.

Yes you need to pull the timing cover to fix this. Also make sure to get the Mopar Performance upgrade kit for the conical washer and bolt. Makes a huge difference. Also loctite the hell out of the bolt when you torque it.

Did you try to run it from a plastic can/jug right off of the pump. If so and it doesn't pump then yes you probably have an issue with the eccentric.

If it did pump gas and run off of the jug then you have issues further back in the line, hose or tank.
