Since the cruising season is almost over, I am going to have my 71 340 rebuilt and after reading some posts on here I've decided to stroke it. It's a 71 motor that's already .40 over. What I'm looking for is the best stroker kits that are available out there. What I mean by best is what the best for your money. thanks.

What are you going to do with it? Not everyone has the same needs/wants. What works for one guy in a street only low rpm combo will come apart like a dollar watch at 7000rpm. In my world kits don't work out well.

I have been thinking about one too, the past few years...gonna have to go with a brand name stuff...or even a company from the engine challenge in one of the mopar mags....

Street use only, no strip. Will hit the gas once in a while but not for a quarter mile. Just a respectable street motor.

if thats the case a stock 340 is respectable enough...if money is not an issue than i guess stroke away.

money is probably better spent on a good set of heads.

better off paying a few hundred more for the better stuff, my machinist likes the K1 4.125 crank with the chevy size rods, he also likes to try to get away with a .020 bore on 340's if he can.

Sorry I can't help to much with that. I would say remember stroker motors add alot of cubic inches so if you don't increase head flow it will add more low end torque but not rpm as well.

Also talk to who ever is going to do the machine work about balancing, some kits do not internal balance well. Get their take on what you want to do before you spend money. just my

I bought several K1 assemblies from both Todd (Competition Wedge) and Dan (performance Only). Both are Moparts members and you can't go wrong dealing with either one. They will take the time to find out what your goals are and help you reach them.

Call Brian H at IMM if you want a Scat forged crank with I beam rods and Icon pistons...this is a well proven combo and more than you need for the street. A cast crank will hold up beautifully too. Forged or cast this is a well machined and great assembly for the buck.

BPE, sells the same cranks as K1 and now complete assemblies I believe. This will cost a bit more, but the BPE crank is a good piece and again the same thing as a k1.
Member DJVCuda is building I believe a 430 based on this setup. There is a thread on it.

These are my two choices and what I am roughly willing to spend when I do this for the street.

The scat cast crank kits are good value for thier money on a street motor.

Shater, you need more specifics and constrants of what you are looking for in the end. That is why you haven't got many responses. And not very detailed responses.

What are you constraints on:

Headers/manifolds
intake
carb
compression
idle characteristics/exhaust note
vacuum
desired HP range

Just off the top of my head.

Here's a 408 stroker with Scat kit, smooth cam, ebrock head, TTI headers that made ~480HP/500TQ: https://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/show...part=1&vc=1

That should be a sweet street motor. I run a nearly identical setup in a 416 with a slightly hotter 274S cam and a cast crank Scat kit from IMM.

Aren't .040 over 340 stroker pistons hard to find? I remember looking for them once and it seemed like the off the shelf pistons didn't go over a 4.070 bore. That's fine with a 360 but that limits a 340 to a 0.30 over bore. Maybe things have changed recently though.

That is what I run cause mine is a street car. Just don't buy it balanced from Scat they do a terible job. Get a good local shop to balance it.

I bought mine balanced from Scat. Brian at IMM has had them checked and they were fine. Mine seems fine.

Add them up - for the parts I got and the condition / quality - the best bang for the buck was BPE - Rod's cranks are cheaper then anyone out there - he combines that with a compstar rod, and his own pistons and for my 4.125" stroker it was hands down the winner, Other places were up to a grand more for what I was getting in the rotating assembly.

I'd contact Rod Bloomer ( BPE on here ) and get a quote. - you will be impressed.

I already mentioned you princess!
I am probably going to do an assembly from Rod next. The parts are really nice stuff for a step up over the typical....when I need it.

Seeing you are from SE Michigan then I would recomend Mike Liston at MRL Performance in Jackson MI. He was in the enguine build off for Mopar Mag last year and can build you a awesome stroker... My 340 was done by mike last year and turned 502 HP at 5600 RPM and 510 FT Torque. He is also a member here and if you contact him he can help you find what you are looking for at a good price. Stay away from Muscle Motors...

Yes - good luck finding .040 340 pistons. When you do find them, they are VERY expensive. Ask me how I know.......

I am not 100% sure, but I would bet that Rod (BPE) can get them for you for a reasonable amount.
P.M. him and see. I have been using one of his 4.125 cranks for a couple years of bracket racing and 100+ pulls on my dyno and still going strong.

within a few minutes I found a few sets of .040 over 340 pistons the other day when I looked.

If finding them, or the price makes it prohibitive, then just build a 360 block. They are in every backyard in america. The LA is very easy to come by...the magnum blocks are the PITA to find...at least around here where the idiot jobber rebuilders buy them all up to make crate junk.

You can probably get someone to GIVE you a 360 blcok for the price of just picking it up and taking it away. LOL

If I was starting from scratch with a 340 I'd be looking at
a 4.250 crank kit from Rod Bloomer (BPE). I have his 4 inch
crank in my 360. Mike

Being in S.E. Michigan, I'd start with Best Machine, Muscle Motors and Hughes... all are in driving distance which will help you avoid having to pay to ship heavy parts.
I've bought from Muscle Motors before, and was quite pleased with the purchases. I've also had work done by Chuck @ Best Machine. They don't come any better. Not cheap, but very high quality work at reasonable prices. (Chuck built the 040 over stroker 340 in my '72 Cuda.)
Whatever you ultimately decide, good luck.
