I am trying to find out info about painted grilles on the 1971 Barracudas/'Cudas. Were they part of a package or individually ordered? Also, did the body color matter (if included in a package)? Thanks, Paul

Thanks Barry...Cool to know this info. I'm still trying to find out how the color-keyed grille was ordered. Was it a completely separate option? Or, was it included with an option group? I've noticed painted grilles on cars with both chrome and painted bumpers, but not seen the argent grille with a painted bumper. I've looked through various literature sources, but have not found anything that sets a rule for this option. Nothing shows the grille as a single option, or included in any group. Thanks again for any additional help! Paul

If a '71 'Cuda (BS) was originally painted: GW3, EV2, GB5, FJ6, GK6, FE5, GF7, GY3, or FC7 it was originally intended to have a painted grill STANDARD. There was no "way" to order/delete a painted grill.
Due to a shortage of painted grills on hand at the factory, (during the winter, because a truck load of painted grills wrecked en route from Canada to Detroit) "argent" grills were substituted as needed.
So, if your '71 'Cuda is: GW3, EV2, GB5, FJ6, GK6, FE5, GF7, GY3, or FC7 odds are it originally had a painted grill. Odds are higher early & late in the model year, with some "wiggle room" in the middle.

Thanks 6bblgt, That makes sense considering how the literature reads. And the shortage issue would explain the occasional differences. Paul

think I've seen a date in print from the rags of 08/20/70 for these colors and the grilles Dan - just curious which would the avocado and "green" line up ? would the avocado be the j6 and green be the f7 - my cuda is originally j6 and was built 05/26/71 but had an argent grille in it when I got it in 1994 and the previous owner told me he bought that grille to replace the original missing grille in the early 80's - thanks, Joe

Dan, are the paint codes listed in any documentation? I didn't see it one Barry's site anywhere. I know those are the right codes, but wondered where they were documented.

Bill, afaik, the rubber bumper was a separate option, not standard with a painted grille, but supposedly Chrysler issued a bulletin on 04/15/71 that A21/A22 rubber bumpers are cancelled for GB5, FC7, EV2, FJ6 and FE5- but were still available for GY3 - but I've never seen the bulletin - maybe it can be confirmed - Joe
