The other day while driving my demon the amp gauge went up to 40 amps drove about 1/2 mile then smelt like a wire burning and amp gauge went to 0. Checked alternator it passed the test at advanced auto. Changed regulator and it started charging again it lasted about 1 minute then stoped charging any ideas what it could be. Thanks Mike

Disconnect the battery and check the amp gauge terminals for clean and tight.

What is it for a car? I would check the connections on the ammeter or bulkhead connector.

bypass that ammeter and use a voltmeter.
