I went for a ride tonight and turned around just outside of town and put my foot into it. It came out of first and spun the right tire in good shape into second (auto 904). Then the engine revved and now no 1st 2nd 3rd or reverse. What happened? The linkage didn't come apart because I can still put it in park. 72 Cuda 340 with a 904. The worst part is I had to have a tow home on a Chevy hauler.

Does the park position still keep it from moving?

Well that rules out the diff, driveshaft, and outout shaft. Converter bolts and oilpump tang may be semi-easily checked just by climbing under it. That's all I can suggest before dropping the pan. I am not a trans guy but have done a half dozen or so 727s.

Pull the dipstick and see whats in the fluid. Metal means money. Friction material isn't quite as bad.

Fluid looks ok, but I will check it more closely and drop the pan in the morning.

Have you tried putting it in low and see if it moves? Is it making any not normal noises?

It holds in park, I have no noises and have nothing in D,2,1 or R. The driveshaft is intact.

Ill bet the converter neck snapped off..got one in the shop now not much else will stop it from moving in any gear super common problem on a 904 .. I have to put new necks on atleast 50% of them.....

did you check the flex plate...

I broke a couple back in the day, and had similar symptoms if I recall correctly.

Break the flexplate & the engine won't start..

I'll bet Sandy called it... 904's are known for that...

Wouldn't this cause a massive fluid leak? I had a 360/904 combo with a hairline crack in the converter neck and fluid poured out of the bell housing.

Pull a cooler line off. Start the car with the transmission in neutral. If the pump and converter are working the fluid will blast out of the line. If the fluid simply drains you know the pump isn't working.

I'll vote for broken pump drive tangs. A broken hub usually causes a massive fluid leak.

I won't be able to pull the tranny for a couple of weeks. What would make the pump tangs fail??
