Yes...I know. This there is nothing left of this dead horse to beat. But I notice a lot of guys getting away with an 8-3/4, so I'm looking for advice about my own personal application.

69 Cuda weighs around 3550 lbs with driver.

418 SB that gets it down the track 7.30 at 94.5 1/8th and 11.30s or so 1/4 at 115ish.

60 ft with M/T E/T streets is 1.62-1.63.

Stock suspension.

727 with a "tight" 10" converter. Will footbrake 2200ish if pushed hard. Launched at 2000.

This car sees 95% street/cruise time. Goes to the track 4-5 times a year at the most. At the moment, it has a stock 8-3/4 with 3:91 gears. A dana will be a huge snowball effect and will run me at least $3-4k for the swap. Any suggestions of what to do to my 8-3/4 to put up with this? Does it need a spool, etc? Remember, it IS a street car most of the time. Is it just a question of "when" not "if" it will let go? If you need anymore info, just let me know. I would really like to avoid the Dana route if I can, so I am looking for your honest opinions based on your experiences.

Thanks

I was foot braking my 64 with a 3.91 geared 8.75..I was running 11.50s. When we pulled the center section, the gears still looked new! I sold the 8.75 stuff and had a Dana built. It is up to you if you want to change...Where are you coming up with 3-4 grand for the swap?

I'd think w/ a good set of axles you'd be fine w/ the 8.75. Even better if it was backed braced.

The 8 3/4 is fine for what you are doing.

I'm not saying it will blow or not but if I were to
keep the 8 3/4 I would back brace it, a set of decent
axles and do the aftermarket carrier caps.... if you
didnt go with the caps I would run load bolts on the
caps

Mr. P when you do the caps don't you have to have it line bored?

I used to run an 8-3/4 in my 440 dart 11.09 best at 121mph but my car was 3270 with me, yours is quite heavy for an A body, i also used moser shafts, 742 centre.

I dunno, I`ve only been beating on mine for 20 years or so(not this exact set)so it`s hard to say if yours will live. Go have some fun and at LEAST put some after market axles it it and I personally run Dutchmans.

Starting to feel a little better. I an not familiar with what back bracing is. Still a bit of a "noob". I would need brakes (I'm guessing I couldn't use my current ones with the Dana)...which leads to big bolt pattern, which leads to new wheels, etc.

I think you'll be fine where you are at. I had no issues with my Dart and the 8 3/4 when it had the 340. It ran 7.24 with 1.52 60', the
8 3/4 couldn't stand the 408 and 1.38 60' though.

Here's a back brace on a 9"... same set up

I have beat and broke my fair share but really think your going to be fine till about the 6.90/10.90 range. Then you will start bending the housing. The leafs are keeping it from folding up right now.

The housing is the week link. It starts bending and then parts break.

We ran 8-3/4 rearends in mid ten second B-bodys and A-bodys with not much trouble,it's when you start putting on big slicks and hooking that things get strained. We do recommend good axles for the 10 second cars.

my car is light but I run a 1.19 60' in the high 8s...
back braced and now I run a alum center that has
big caps... even my Strange axles have twist in them

I have a couple dozen passes on mine. I have 35 spline axles, spool, and 3.91 motive gears with a back brace. Car weighs 3800 lbs with me in it. Foot brake 1.51 best 60' 10.63 @ 128 mph. The rest of the runs are between 10.63 and 10.80. I have had it apart to check everything out two times now and everthing looks like new still. Im going to keep running mine for now.

BTW my Dana was less than $2000 shipped, this with a spool and race axles.

I don't think you need to worry yet. I would recommend aftermarket axles though.

If you are going to buy axles, caps, backbrace and maybe even a spool, I would think about spending toward the Dana. I just put a Dana together for about $1,300. That included buying a junk yard rearend, having it cut, axles, housing ends, gears(used), spool, yoke, u-joints, pads, bearings and drive shaft shortened.

If you compare the expenses of what you are going to add to your 8 3/4 (axles-$350, backbracing-$100, caps & milling-$150) $600 to the cost of the dana $1300 minus what you can get for your 8 3/4 as it sits say $500, $800 net, it is only $200 to upgrade.

My car (3300lbs) was run a long time on a 8 3/4 with stock axles at high 10's. I would check them alot but never a sign of a problem. So as I said from the start if I was going to buy axles and maybe a spool and was thinking about any power increases I would go ahead and spend my money towards the dana, but as you sit today you will probably be fine with what you have.

I ran a 8 3/4 under my Demon it was probably 3400 lbs with me in it. It had a billet cap and stock axles. It was going 6.40's in the 1/8 with a 1.36 60 ft on a 100 shot nos.
