I had a similar problem with my 98 Dakota automatic.. Limped it home, dropped the pan, changed Dextron and filter.. Took a test run, shifted fine and its been working fine 50K miles later.. Just my $0.02..

Possible a speed sensor. Will still read on the speedo but wont shift. Just replace on the old mans 4x4 '99. It would NOT shift out of 1st. Take speed sensor out hook voltmeter up to it and spin it, no voltage its shot; change in voltage speed sensor ok.
