My 99 Dakota, 318 automatic won't shift up. If I take the negative battery cable off for a minute, it will shift up fine until the next time I shut it off. Then it won't shift again. Take the cable off and it will again. Any thoughts? Curt

I had a similar problem with my 98 Dakota automatic..
Limped it home, dropped the pan, changed Dextron and filter..

Took a test run, shifted fine and its been working fine 50K miles later..

Just my $0.02..

Another problem lies with the rear o2 sensor. It tells the ECM when the cat is warmed up but it messes up shifting sometimes. Putting a scanner on will report a trans solenoid and trans pressure issue, but will also report a rear o2 sensor glitch. Replacing the rear o2 will clear everything up.

Apparently the no upshift is intentional so you will take the truck in for service. Our truck did this.

Possible a speed sensor. Will still read on the speedo but wont shift. Just replace on the old mans 4x4 '99. It would NOT shift out of 1st.

Take speed sensor out hook voltmeter up to it and spin it, no voltage its shot; change in voltage speed sensor ok.

1973 Charger, former SE, former auto

I'm not trying to be difficult, it comes naturally....
