2006 Ram - 185,000 miles - 5.7 Hemi

Check Engine Light came on today while driving down the road. No other differences in operation, gauges normal, etc.

I did the on-off keystroke. The odometer showed only dashes for about 5 seconds, and then said '- done -'

Any ideas?

In these trucks, its actually called the Malfunction Indicator Lamp, or MIL.
Check the owners manual to see if you have maintained the truck according to the service recomendations. The 5.7 HEMI, especially with MDS, needs frequent oil changes and 5w20 oil. The components of the MDS system relys on clean oil since there are tiny orifices that will become blocked if dirty oil leaves deposits behind. My 2007 strictly states a 3000 mile oil change interval and I do my best to stick to it. Have you changed the Oxygen sensors? At 185 K, they are certainly ready for replacement. The spark plugs are NOT 100K plugs!!! These engines used standard plugs and need to be changed at every 30 K. Read the manual if you have heard different from Ford guys. Your best chances reside with maintaining the truck to factory specs. This engine is much more sophisticated than any 318, and it requires maintenence.

So why doesn't it give me a code on the odometer?

As far as maintenance, I've changed plugs once/yr ever since I bought it (averaging about 30K miles/year). Current set has about 15K on them. I routinely change oil between 3-4K, using 5-20 synthetic and I use the 'large' size Baldwin filters. I have not changed the O2 sensors, so I may do that anyway.

Haven't had a change to get the OBD read, but I'll do that and see what it says.

Because only certain year Rams did

My 2004 Did Not also

Autozone / Advance Auto will read it for free like mentioned - You can also clear the code once done with the scanner

You can also pull the Pcm fuse under the hood to clear the code also - I dont remember the exact # on the fuse block

Write the code down and google search - Or go on any of the Dodge Truck forums

Or

Report back with a code and see what we can come up with

Thanks...I thought pretty much all Chrysler stuff would read the codes through the on-off key sequence.

I don't want to clear it without finding out what it is. Hopefully will get by somewhere tomorrow to get it read.

P0128 coolant temperature.

Temp gauge reads in "normal" range, and coolant level is fine.

Suggestions? I'm thinking temp sensor or t'stat?

This may help. Sounds like a stat issue. Taking too long to reach operating temp

Any idea what fuse to pull to reset the light? My thought is to reset and see if it comes back before I start changing parts.
