Jim, what's the SPD & assy plant on your car? My early (9/30/67) St.Louis RR has same interior but the seat inserts are unpleated Reed grain. Same with another early L.A. RR I used to own.
Your inserts are the '69 style pleated & different grain.
Unpleated Reed inserts were to the best of my knowledge correct for '68, but maybe there was a change at some point; I suspect it may have been because the unpleated inserts stetched too much. I knew a few cars back then with that interior and I recall some stretching out.

Mine is a fairly late (5-4-68) build RR from the Lynch Road plant. The headliner and carpet are the only replacements. Everything else in the interior is still original. The car was raced for a couple of years then parked. Mice got into the headliner and the carpet had a hole when they added a floor shifter vice the column. The silver headliner was difficult to find.

Thanks for the info; the insert material has been a "thing" with me; what you're saying supports the theory that the '69-style inserts were phased in sometime during '68.

Cool info - I never knew about the different seat inserts before! Of all the date codes I found on my car, the seats were the latest dates. The rear seat sections have some small metal tags with the dates of May 10 and May 13, 1968. Basically within a week of the May 4 SPD. Never found any tags on the front bench lower section. Owner's manual shows the car was delivered the first week in June 68.

I'd like to hear from more guys with this interior - known original '68s only - as far as assy plants & SPDs.
Back in the '80s, only the later pleated-insert style covers were available; the dies for the Reed pattern didn't exist any more, and had to be made using the covers from my car as samples. I got a free set of new covers out of the deal. So this has always been something of interest to me.
