Replacing the Carter AVS on a '69 GTX 440 4-Speed, do I need the throttle extension (Holley P/N 20-7)?? This is a 4-Speed car and of course no kickdown linkage so do I need the stud (Holley P/N 20-36) that the kickdown linkage is on just for the throttle return spring????

I was told by a "sales representative" at one of the vendors that I needed both of these items for Chrysler Application but looking at it on the 440 and having had this same Street Avenger on my '68 AUTOMATIC road runner (less CFM of course) I could actually hook the throttle cable to the stock Holley carburetor linkage that is provided. The throttle cable would have about a 5-10 degree angle but nothing that I can see would cause a problem. What do you think; no extension, extension only to get the throttle cable straight, or the extension with the stud and use the stud for the return spring???

You don't need one, You can use the hole circled, or you can make the large hole larger and use your stock rod. I've done both in the past w/o issue. How ever you can't use that post sticking off the carb it's too big.

I don't need auto trans kickdown (4-spd) so do I need a rod/stud stock or otherwise? That short, large diameter post inboard is labeled as; Use for Ford Automatic Kickdown.

That small hole you circled is perfect and that is exactly where the throttle cable end "clasp" reaches and where I was going to mount it.

I was thinking I would just hook the throttle return spring in the large hole you pointed out or should I hook it somewhere else or even drill a new hole for the return spring????

Thanks

return spring can go anywhere. Even at the bottom and towards the fire wall. I guess you could put it on that upper post. It should stay.

Jeff thanks. Have you used a Holley with a stock cast iron intake manifold? I have to use at least a 3/8" (or more) thick gasket under the carb for it to clear the secondary linkage and the idle speed on the choke on the other side. I may even have to remove/grind some of the cast iron manifold for the secondaries to work at the diaphram rod?????? The last Holley I put on was with an Edelbrock aluminum manifold and it bolted right on with a fairly thin gasket....not so with the stock cast iron manifold . I'm afraid that the stock air cleaner will hit the hood if I use enough thickness carb to intake gaskets. I have to see how thick/tall I can go or grind the intake at the choke thermostat well to get everything to clear. Things that I think will be bolt on or easy lately just haven't been

Thanks,

MikeR

The throttle lever extension does more than configure the transmission linkage, it extends the throttle stud farther outward to line up with the throttle cable. If you hook the throttle cable end directly to the Holley lever the cable aims more inward.

the 69 and early intakes were not designed to accept a holley carb , you'll have to grind on the intake or put a 1/2" spacer under the carb ... but you know that .

just order a 1/2" 4 hole spacer.

Have to check hood to unsilenced O.E. air filter cover clearance with 1/2" but may just get out the grinder

It also screws up the stock coil mount have to figure that out. Have some 1" - 1-1/2" flat stock that I can maybe offset it forward a little and keep it in about the same area.

Thanks John and Jeff

I put a Holley 750 Double Pumper on a 440 GTX 4 speed. It worked best to use the throttle lever adapter. I also ground some material off the manifold for clearance. Used a little thicker gasket. I also bought the aftermarket coil bracket that moves the coil out of the way, and the fuel line kit that made it all look as if it were a factory installation. The bracket and fuel line are made/ sold by Fabulous Fabrications. 303-666-9882 .These parts a well worth the few dollars they cost. I used the stock air cleaner that cleared the hood.

That's the other problem you run into , I took a piece of 1/4" 6061 and made a plate to do the opposite , move the coil to the correct location when using a DP4B which has the coil on the other side.
