i have a powermaster 8158 160 amp single wire direct to the battery. had one on there for 6 years and worked great. suddenly started to spike to 18 volts. turned out that the diodes and regulator(which is adjustable) were bad. decided to buy another one and send the old one in for rebuilding and have a spare. new one worked for a month flawlessly and then suddenly started doing the same thing as the old one. battery is fully charged and in good working condition, ground for alt. is good and main wire to battery is good. anyone have any input? thanks for any advice.

Sounds like the regulator is to wimpy to handle the
alt... did you get the old one rebuilt yet... put it
on and see if its back to normal

I dont care for the single wire alts either... why buy
a complete alt when you have a regulator problem...
I really like the Denso with a external regulator...
real simple to hook up and I can buy just a regulator
if it goes bad

I agree with MR P. (most of the time, he is smarter then me) the Denso with a remote reg. is a good way to go. Because it gets it's voltage reference close to the loads not at the altenator and can compensate for some voltage drop thru the wiring. Even more important on a street/strip car. I'm a sparky and don't like v.d. problems.
