1996 318 auto 4WD, owned since new, always well maintained, 168,000 miles,
It momentarily cuts out for a split second sporadically while driving at any speed, over time has gotten worse and more frequent.
Very inconsistent, sometimes only cuts out 1 or 2 times in a 15 mile trip and then take that same trip again and it will cut out 15 times or more. Also when coming to a stop or letting off the truck shuts off but start back up easily. Cold starts fine. Tried to pull stored codes and none were stored checking it several times.. then recently stored this code 1000 (OX3E8) [#11] (MESSAGE-DCX. Not sure if this code indicates the problem.

Any suggestions or fixes would be greatly appreciated.

general consensus on this problem is a bad pick-up in the distributor. also, the connection to the distributor might be loose, and check the connections at the computers, and grounds. replace the hall effect in the distributor (rock auto has them, like 15 bucks) and this should go away. worked for me.

Take the power distribution box next to the battery out to get to the main harness.Untape the main harness where it goes to a Y.There are three wires that go to a connector and then one wire out.The connector is prone to corroding,mine actually crumbled when I untaped it.Solder the wires and heat shrink them.This and what is mentioned above should solve your problem.
