Ok so I've for the most part spent most of my time dealing with mopars with coils on the intake manifold. I just assume that is where they go in a horizontal position, never figured it would be an "issue".

So I've burned up two in short time on my 54, a generic one and now an accell chrome super coil. (Friday as I pulled into traffic, bad time to fail) The oil leaked on the last one. Said forget it I'll go msd next. Read the install doc after buying it and see do not mount horizontal unless you use the epoxy filled one. So just sharing in case anyone else is killing coils or looking to install them, get a mopar one for your app, or double check it is ok for horizontal mount. Or find some real estate where it can live vertical.

Grumble that is all.

Well, my Jacobs chrome canister-type coil lived for years in the stock horizontal mount on the intake manifold.

Maybe they still make them?

I had one MSD Blaster leak the oil out years ago (it was still pretty new, too).

In addition to mounting them verically, getting them off the hot intake has surely got to help, too.

go to NAPA and get there best one, then make sure your voltage to the coil is around 7 to 9v with engine running.

The MSD's are Chinese made now. Maybe there's a better alternative for ya??

I've ran coils on my intake forever and never really had an issue.

Dead ones are an accel and a generic one I picked up at chryslers at Carlisle several years ago. The engine is much cleaner with the coil off the intake (there is not a lot of real estate up top of a 241). I also relocated the ignition box and voltage regulator while I was in there. My electrical tape also started getting sticky so it also got replaced with some better quality stuff.

I did see that made in china on the msd, but I'd already got it home so it is on there and hopefully will not need to be replaced any time soon.

I take that back...My coil on the Newport died and it was getting really hot. I have moved it to the inner fender and haven't had any more issues.

My cheapo Summit 40000 volt ones are happy on the firewall of my Model A, the intake of my 440 Challenger, and the side of the slant six in my Valiant.

For less than $20 each I'm a pretty happy guy!
