Looks like you guys were right, at least about the fact that it's a venting issue. The vent tube is not squished - it's not there at all! I apologize if this seems elementary, especially for someone with as many posts as I have, but I do appreciate your help. I basically got this car exactly as it is, and very recently at that, with all of the kinks clearly not worked out. It was supposed to be "done," but apparently that means different things to different people. In any case, I think it's time to dig out my factory service manual and figure out how to put this vent tube on. I have another request. Here are pictures of my trunk - could someone post some pictures of what it's supposed to look like? And if someone has pictures of an install of a vent tube, that would be ideal. Also, is this ( http://www.yearone.com/serverfiles/fbsho...earchid=5871866 ) the correct part? Is there somewhere other than Year One that I should order from?

The vent tube runs from the top of the filler neck tube where it meets the quarter panel and dumps off into the inner framerail next to the filler neck tube. I seriously don't think it plays into the filling process since it doesn't even touch the tank and the pump nozzle is more than surely pass the exit point of the filler neck tube (nipple connection for vent tube at top). It's main function would be venting when the gas cap is closed. I have always had this issue with all my 2nd generation Chargers and I've owned them for over 30 years now. I never leave the pump on auto. Sometimes it is the position of the nozzle outlet in the filler tube. I always hold mine such that the tip of the nozzle is against the outboard side the filler tube, not just sitting in there. It is a pain in the butt, but sure beats having to clean all the fuel spillage off the quarter.

The vent pipe connects to the filler tube via a small piece of rubber hose at the top, runs down the tube & held in place by the clamps tacked onto the tube. Then exits the trunk floor via a rubber grommet into the frame rail

It seems that you guys are forgetting the 1970/71 vent tube. In my 70, there is another pipe just behind the right rear wheelwell inside the trunk. 4 lines go from the gas tank UNDER the car into this tube, with a 5th one that runs out and forward to the engine compartment. This tube in the trunk is the same galvanized type and diameter as the filler tube. I seem to recall that this was an emissions thing that was later changed. I have seen this in A body cars in 1970 and 71 as well.
For '70 Chargers, that's a California thing...........

John. Here's the tank end of the filler neck.. If something is lodged down there, it'll clog things up for sure.......... It's not a direct filler neck diameter passage as you can see........

What he said...If you are pumping fuel into your tank and you dont have an exit for the fumes to go through, then you are creating a pressure inside the tank. Similar to a funnel inside a container, when you pour the liquid into the funnel, the vapor cant escape and it causes a pressure bubble to come past the liquid entering, except to a gasoline nozzle it means frequently shutting off. The vent on the filler neck isn't the problem. I have one on my 69 and it does it sometimes. The vent tube is too high up on the filler tube where it wont allow vapor to escape from the fuel tank. My 70 Charger had that vent tube hugging the wheel well on the passnger side. I remember mine having four 3/8" tubes on the tank underneath for emissions and vapor
