Couple of questions to throw in...I've been using spray bomb primer to cover the bare metal as I've been working, do I need to remove it before apply the "real" primer and one other thing (rookie questions, sorry) should the bare metal be primed before or after filler?

What kind of primer? If it's cheap, couple dollars a car stuff, I would sand it off. If it's a better etch primer, I'd just scuff it.
I either etch prime or epoxy before I do the mud work.
