i a a 440/727 , does anybody have a diagram of how the speedometer gear is set up in the transmission, i have a leak coming thru where the speedometer cable hooks into to the transmission speedmeter gear
housing, i have attached a pic. , it is leaking from where the speedometer cable screws onto to the speedometer gear housing.

i am guessing that i need to take out the speedometer gear out of the transmission and there must be an o'ring in the center where the cable goes?

thanks

There is a rubber seal in the housing that seals the pinion shaft, it's held in by a wire ring both of which are visible in the pic below.

great, thanks for the pic. , pic is worth thousand words.

so i take off the bolt holding the retaining clip and slide the speedomter cable housing off and then it will be just like your pic.

then i somehow get the wire ring off and the take out the rubber seal and replace the rubber seal?

thanks

John, i really appreciate you taking the time and the trouble to post the pic., i have the car jacked up and trying to fix it and it is about 100degrees here and i am very hot and frustrated.

Yep, keep track of how it's clocked when removing. Just pick out the wire ring and seal with a hook, a 1/4" drive socket makes a good installation tool for both.

hey Mike, that is what i started out doing this weekend fixing the fuel leak and when i took the car cover off the car and jacked it up and was going to extend the rubber line up higher is when i noticed transmission fluid all under the speedometer cable on the tranny, so i switched from fixing the fuel leak to fixing the transmission leak since the fuel does not leak just sitting and the transmission is leaking while sitting.

Sorry to hijack this post, but I need to replace the speedometer pinion gear. How do you get it out? If you follow the instructions on this thread and remove the wire clip with a hook and the seal, will the "adapter" (that's what the parts book calls it) come right out? Then what do you do?

To replace the gear you remove the housing and pull the gear out and stick the new one in.it just sticks through from the inside.

That's my question, how do you remove the housing? Will it come right out when you remove the wire clip?

You remove the bolt and y shaped piece that hold the housing in and pull the whole thing out.You don't need to remove the wire clip. Just be sure that you clock the housing to match the new speedo pinion. The instruction on clocking are in the tech archives. Put a drain pan under it because you will lose a couple of ounces of fluid.

I tried that already, and it didn't pull out easily, so since it's made of plastic I didn't try to force it. Does it need to be turned before it will come out, or do I need to pry it out with a screwdriver a little to break it loose? (Or both?)

If it's stuck, it's easier to remove the housing with the speedo cable still attached. After you remove the clamp and nut, grab the 1" nut which retains the cable to the pinion gear housing and start to wiggle the cable and housing as a whole, from side to side very slightly. It'll take some patience, but it should eventually break loose.

You can see on this black plastic housing where a screwdriver was used to pry it out.

'nother pic of the two plastic housings and the different pinion gear:

Ok, so my transmission is sitting on the floor of the garage with no cable in it, but after finding out that there's nothing holding it in, I carefully grabbed it with a needlenose pliers and gently pulled it out.

Thanks a lot for the information, everybody. (How did we do this stuff back before the internet?)

We broke stuff and had to buy it again.
