I figured my carb was being a PITA, but now I'm unsure.

I have a 750cfm Elec. choke Edelbrock carb and I run a mechanical fuel pump. I really don't like the carb, but I don't have the funds right now to get something else.

I would hope the carb isn't bad, it's only a couple years old with no much usage. Although, I'm unsure about the fuel pump, I cannot remember if it was new or from a junker I plucked.

Where're some other place I can look to maybe find my issue?

Thanks for any input.

take the fuel pump out, stick the inlet into your gas can with some fuel line and give it 2-3 pumps, there should be gas literally squirting out of it that fast.

Chances are the fuel pump is your problem.

Alright, I'll try that.

Do they just go bad? I haven't run it since October, it ran fine then. I only removed it to seal the timing cover.

Thanks.

if the little rubber diaphram gets any damage OR if its not properly seated on the eccentric, it won't work at all.

I thought I had a bad fuel pump and it turns out there wasn't ANY gas in the tank since I had dropped it to put in a new filter sock wow did i feel dumb

sure there is gas in the tank??
sometimes the diaphram in the fuel pump might shrink.pour some gas/penetrating oil on the carb side of the pump, let it drain into the pump let it sit for a little while.(1 beer, or about 20 minutes)might bring it back too life.I have done this many times with success. Some brands of gas seem to make this happen when sitting for a long period of time.

Check your pickup tube in the tank, mine was restricted with rust and cause fuel starvation issue with my car.

Yep, filled all 22 gallons before setting it. I started it for afew minute a month back, if that ate it all... I'm in trouble.

See if the pump is working... pull the fuel line going towards the tank, and stick a vacuum gauge on it and get someone to crank the engine over. It should draw a vacuum as it's cranking over, if not...time for another pump
(or visa-versa and check for pressure coming out of the side going to the carb of course )

I was out earlier and just got one for cheap. I go to put it on and now I need a new fuel line.

I forgot to mention I have a newer fuel regulator(Holley) on after the pump, before the carb. If this goes bad, will it stop fuel flow? It's the newest thing on the system.

Can't remember if the they way they work, they can totally block flow or not in a failure ?

Could always bypass it to double check
Fuel pump seems kinda more likely, but easy to check everything out before

I replaced the pump and the line to the carb. Still nothing coming up.

This is an LA 360 in a 1995 Dakota.

The original fuel pump is in, but gutted with a 3/8s line to the bottom with a sock on it.

Could be the engine is not spinning over quick enough to prime up the new pump?
Try filling the carb bowl with gas manually, and fire it up...see if that gets fuel up to the pump perhaps

Didn't someone with a yellow Demon do that and get a special smilie?

I'm fearful for that.

I'll retry tomorrow. Started to rain again.

Please have a video camera handy... "just in case"

BTW...make sure the fuel pump is sucking too, if you have no luck still...

Have someone take an air nozzle from an air tank or compressor and stick into the fuel filler neck and stuff rags around it and pressurize the tank forcing fuel forward to the pump then crank over. Make sure that the tank has plenty of fuel in it.

Fluffy: I am having the same problem as you are on my 340 Demon. No gas from carb. side of fuel pump. Replaced fuel pump and filter, still getting no fuel to carb. Plenty of gas going to pump from tank side???

I'm not sure what I did, but I have fuel now.

I'm nervous starting this, not sure why.

How much is too much PSI on start up? I've got 5psi coming in and it was slowly going up.

First try it backfired out the exhaust, so I fiddled the timing a bit. Second try it backfired exhaust then carb. I'm thinking it's getting too much gas.

Or is my distributor out 180? I set it back the way I marked it, when it came out.

I let it set to run the fuel back down for now.

Thanks.

I used a mityvac hand vacuum pump to draw fuel up to the fuel pump. worked pretty good

5 psi sounds fine... when it back fired, hope it didn't blow your power valve (if you have an old holley?)

Maybe just try and get your timing around TDC or so to start with and see if it will fire ? (If you are not sure where it was, assuming you kept it in the 180 degree out way)

Ok, I have it all set, it started. Next problem.

It starts and stays at like 5,000RPMs

I have an 1411 Edelbrock. 750cfm, Electric Choke.

Is this just something wrong with my choke?

I tried to bump the gas it to see if it would drop in RPMs and it doesn't.

Thanks.
