What was the deal with these 71 340's with thermo quads. I have heard/and read maybe this is the best carb for a 340. When i bought my first Challenger in 1974 it was a 71 340-4speed car. I thought the thermo quad on the car was junk-it did not kick in or run hard. A friend of mine looked at the carb and discovered a piece of the linkage was disconnected. Man waht a difference-that carb kicked in and would burn the rear tires (not a lot but it did spin the tires when the throttle was mashed). The carb was missing alot of the choke pieces and what not-i don't know if someone who knew what they were doing or not had worked on the carb. I have had alot of carbs over the years-and i have never had another 4 barrel carb that kicked in and ran like that carb did. My six packs kicked in real hard, but i don't think they spun the tires like the thermo quad did. My friend bought a new thermo quad, but it did not run like the one i had on my car. Is the 71 340 carb special/specific only to a 71 340 or what. Do they sell an identical carb like the 71-or due you get a diff carb than the original 71. How many cfm's were those 71 340 carb's rated at, didn't they have a 800 cfm rating? Then why do most mopart's posters recommend a 650 Holley dual feed/double pumper over a 750 dual feed/double pumper, when the 71 340 ran so well with a big thermo quad?

Put a big block 4 speed Scat Pack Dodge in your garage.

'71 340 carbs are a one year only oem based on the 2nd design Competition Series(aftermarket performance)T.Q. It is rated @ 800 cfm's and is an air metered metering system and is a spread- bore design.

The Comp Series carbs are 850 and 1,000 cfms and are also air metered design and were produced from 1969-1972. The first design was a press-in jet style while the 2nd design and the '71 340 carb was a screw-in jet style.

Jets and metering rod(tuning kits)are very hard to find these days so tuning can be a problem.

All '72-84 T.Q.'s were a sold fuel meter carb and shared little in common with parts interchange ability with the '71 T.Q. but many more used and new parts are still avail for tuning.

No new T.Q.s avail and the next best would be a '72 340 carb or a '72-'74 big block T.Q.(850 cfm's)as these are all non smogger carbs, David.
