so my recent question on ....383 vs 440 has a pretty
clear winner, so what heads would be the best for a streetable ,pump gas 500hp engine?

also what is your opinion on the edelbrock top end kit vs other kits?

cnc'd small heads are good, but there are good used 440-1s floating around out there.

If you can port the heads yourself, the Indy/Aerohead big block heads are $499/set.
To get the power you want figure in at least 8+ hours of your labor porting the heads, plus all the materials. The open chambers may also make it difficult to get good quench and compression.
The Edelbrock RPM or 440 Stealth heads cost about twice as much, but should flow out of the box as well or better than home ported iron heads, they have closed chambers and weight alot less. The closed chambers, aluminum construction and lack of the exhaust crossover (keeps the intake cooler) should allow more compression without detonation.
Really, the aluminum heads are a better performance deal than the stock type iron heads unless you need the exhaust crossover for extreme
cold weather driving, or are required for stock appearance and/or class rules specify them.

The edelbrock top end kit is probbably good, but I prefer using Camshafts designed to take advantage of the larger Mopar 0.904" tappet size.
