Are they only supposed to have one trunk torsion spring in 72 and up cars possibly since their would be less weight with no wing equipped cars? So the drivers side trunk hinge falls when you remove the deck lid?

71's had one spring. I think they went back to two springs sometime during 71 production. 72-74 should all have two.

Now I'm really confused.

I've seen some 71's with one and some with two. My 73 Challenger has two.

I've always heard that they went back to two sometime in 71.

My 72 cuda has one rod. When i installed the spoiler, i just moved it a notch tighter for the extra weight and it works fine.

maybe it was an option? if you had a plain deck lid, you got 1, if you had a spoiler or wing or luggage rack, you got 2?

my 70 Cuda is a Gran Coupe, and had the chrome luggage rack on the deck lid, it has 2 bars.

John, are your you sure your car came from the factory with the rack? I thought 71 was the last year that the rack was offered. Could yours have been a dealer or parts counter add-on?

By the way, my 73 Challenger has 2 rods.

There were a couple of non-factory add-ons on mine when I got it in 1995, and the luggage rack could be as well. If so, it was probably added when somebody repaired the damage from a rear-end collision long ago.
The trunk stayed open just fine with the luggage rack and only one spring, though it tended to twist it pretty badly (which is why I now have 2 springs).
