In our on going effort to get the 1969 426 hemi to run right, my mechanic has decided that we need to try some New Carbs. The factory carbs have been rebuilt 3 times and he says they are dumping gas and fouling the plugs in short order.

What would you guys suggest in place of the carters?
Edelbrock carb(s)? What model and size?

Thanks!

If you have original AFB carbs for your car, I would suggest another mechanic or try here

Depends on your setup. If you are running a factory 2x4 you are limited to the 600 Edelbrocks as the 750's butterflys are too big to work. The holes in the intake's carb mounting flange are too small. No Holleys will fit that intake either.
If you decide to replace your carbs, drop me a pm. I have a pair of like new 600's that I bought from Mancini last august and they were set up by Jake, of Jakes Garage in Detroit, a Hemi expert. They work perfectly and have the correct fittings to use the factory fuel lines. I went to a pair of 800's on a ported/modified intake on my 528. I will make you a good deal if you are interested. I am sure you also know not to let your carbs go if they are original Hemi carbs!

BTW, should you decide to shelve your originals and are set on new replacements I can provide you with those as well (Hemi Clone carbs, 600 or 750 cfm). Either way it's up to you.

My Clones look like this pic, OE style tags, linkage, fuel inlet fittings, automatic chokes, etc. are all optional. The lids are the correct diameter (because they are vintage lids) to fit your original air cleaner unlike any other new carb you can purchase new.

*The carbs above are original 69's I restored for another customer

Just curious, what is the CFM of the OEM Carters?

Thanks!

OEM Hemi carbs are rated at 625cfm each, older Competion Series Carters and new Edelbrocks are rated at 600cfm each, however, all 3 above mentioned carbs are basically the same castings so there is likely little if any actual flow difference between them.

*FYI, VERY few Hemis require dual 750 cfm carbs, only BIG horse power engines need that much cfm to stay happy.

if they're dumping fuel why don't you check the fuel pressure before you buy new carbs?

the carters and edelbrocks are very sensitive to fuel pressure, and i believe 6psi is max, 5 is preferred, but you should look that up to be sure.

we pinched off the fuel line to reduce pressure and it still dumps gas down.

Vacuum is 17-18 lbs

You did what ? pressure is a resistance to flow ....

no, you need a pressure gauge in there to see what it is doing. that won't do it.

but it doesn't sound like you have found the issue. where is it dumping from? and after shutting off, or when it is running? sounds like you need to look at this closer and see what is really going on. are the floats really adjusted correctly? it's easy to take the top of the carb off and find out.

my guess is line pressure, but depends on when it is happening...

those carbs are very simple. float level is too high, too much fuel pressure, or dirt in the needle and seats; thats all it can be be. try a different mechanic or better yet learn to fix'em yourself. you can do it!
