we put a m/p hydro cam .450" in a good 360,and a set of aerohead redone heads.ck brgs and everything looked good, was a proven stock motor.we started it and a lot of valvetrain noise, never got better,i prelubed the engine, soaked the lifter, ect.im not a newbe, but what the heck? the chatter is valvetrain, and it never gets better or worse, holds good 50-60# psi, runs ok,but should run better..any ideas? the rockers are oiled from engine, and not loose by touch, help.

If you are using stock stamped rockers, there is a possibility your pushrods are too short. Are you using pushrods from a 340 or 360? Pushrods from a 273 or 318 are slightly shorter and will cause a clatter.
They are???? - . You aren't serious are you??? Because the only pre roller push rods for a LA small block that are a different length are the 273 mechanical/solid lifter push rods used in the 273's which are much longer than the hydrualic lifter push rods and T/A 340's push rods are different too. Hydraulic lifter small blocks all use the same push rods and rocker gear. How ever valve springs will vary with application.

360 push rods are a little and I mean alittle longer than 318/340.
NOT Never have been - never will be. They all call for the same part number. Always have. Other than those I mentioned in the other post. Only way is brand or vendor machining tolerance differences but still with in tolerance, but technically they call for the same push rod.

It's called junk lifters !!! poor quality. if it was a good running motor before that tell me that lifters are bad . just finished a 340 T/A motor.did the same thing, going to a solid lifter camnow, called everyone from east to west no good answers but a lot of engine builders tell me of poor lifters and going to solid cams. my friend went through 3 sets and so did i!! drivers side pumped up but still noisey and pass side #2 intake and exh and 6 intake wont pump up. if you can find a anwser let me know cause monday night in goes the soild lifter cam. I'm missing the Nats because of this problem. well got to go. if you can help me call my cell 440 413 7069 thanks phil.

Were the pushrods new? Why I ask, I agree with Don, they were all the same......but the originals I intended on using were almost 1mm shorter than the new ones I bought. They "looked" fine. Luckily I didn't run them, the rocker play just seemed too loose cold.
Probably 200,000miles of wear. Age does strange things. I am a couple of inches shorter than I was a few years ago too. (Get your mind where it belongs) ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frowwn.gif)

I have found spec on length from 7.45 to 7.53. Now tell me they aren't different!!! Just like going to Autozone, if the manufactures think they can do away with a specific part then they will all the while telling you they are the same. I have gone into my parts and have compared the two and the 360 push rod is a tad longer.
Good for you I am sure glad you did that. It only means a vendor difference, or they are in tolerance, or one set is warn out. Technically speaking they all call for the same push rod. Hell there may be a slight variation in pushrods or other moving parts on a certain engine. Castings and machining varies slightly. Your push rod length has absolutally nothing to do with whether one is a 318 and the other is a 360. It just happened that way. They were the same in 1971 and they never changed them until the roller lifter engines.
