I use the Mopar reusable gaskets and have had 0 problems and have had the VC off MANY times.

Someone on here once said the MP cast aluminum valve covers can hit the intake manifold before they touch the cylinder head gasket surface which prevents them from sealing.

happened on my 340 dart, just got it done for the mopar nats, smelled oil after beating the crap out of it behind some of the motels, and found the covers hit the rpm airgap,so thanks to autozone, and double stack sealed her upafter a parking lot rebuild, for more thrashing on the car, slinging pavement behind the motels once again!!!!

I've always done this with good results using good 'ol cork gaskets and stock appearance. Obviously make sure all surfaces are clean and dry. Using 3M gasket adhesive or similar, (follow the directins!) GLUE the gasket to the valve cover. Make sure they're on good and flat, I've laid them gasket down on a clean surface with weight on top to ensure a flat, tight fit. Then RTV the exposed side of the gasket and pop-em on the head. If you RTV both sides the gasket, it will want to squeeze out when tightening the cover down. Just my .02, and probably not the route to go if you have solid lifters and will be pulling the covers to adjust rockers fairly often.

Its not just the MP valve covers that hit the intake runners. I've seen it with M/T, Holley and Edelbrock covers too.
I used a 3/16" thick Fel Pro gasket in a 360 AND took a file to the valve covers. No leaks here.

You are a smart man. I did the same thing!

main thing is to prep the head suface along with the VC lips

i use a rag with brake clean to wipe the oil off the haed vc rail

I like the mopar atf/rtv for glueing the gasket to the VC then a thin coat on the gasket head side.

you must let it cure over night and do not over torque the gasket on the install.

in some gasket kits felpro has some thick hard gaskets, you have to crank them down till you feel it crush some or they wont seal.

on my BB I have old cork VC gasket with copper rtv on both side, they got to cure a few weeks before getting run, sealed up tight so far.

with alum VC,i have had to clearance them around the intake runner/head area, also make sure your aftermarket bolts are not to long and bottom out in the holes

I have seen that make them leak more than once

clean and cure time is key to sealing them IMHO

I use a bead of high temp RTV on both sides of the gasket. Works fine!

Has to take a cutoff wheel to my edelbrocks to get them to clear my air-gap, its a good place to double check. Lots of other good tips on here for getting them to seal. Lots of ways to skin that kitty.
