I'm working on a buddies 340 motor. He picked up some edelbrock SB heads cheap but not the 340 specific ones and sure enough he's got pistons that hit with an .039' gasket.

I'm guessing the only solution other than trading for the right heads (or pistons) would be to set the heads on a mill and cut an open chamber to clear. I'm guessing this is all Edelbrock does? They "make" a 340 head by just milling a std head?

If so, what would I want to shoot for for quench?

The guy who bought my little 341 lives in TN and he accidently bought a pair of the open chamber 340 Eddies, maybe y'all can arrange a swap??

On his next build if he uses the same heads it is easier to source pistons for the 318/360 closed chamber.

Head gasket will fix it, we run the 318 head on a 340 with the piston out of the deck.

How thick is your gasket and if you measured, how much piston to head clearance do you have? Thanks........

I think a thicker gasket of course would be the easiest but any concerns with intake/head matchup?

I don't have the motor here but he and his neighbor is saying the supposed .039 gaskets measure .030 and the piston is .028 out of the hole.

We decided to pull the whole motor and go thru the bottom end just for piece of mind. It was in the car when it was bought but no info on it at all. If the bores are all ragged out and it needs an overbore along with new pistons, than its simple...

To get anything thicker than an .039" I'll have to step up to an MLS or ICS Copper gasket right?

I'd really like to keep it simple with a composition gasket.

Once I get ahold of it I'll know for sure but I suppose I can flycut the piston tops a bit and then have it rebalanced. Who knows if it ever was done before so I'd think it might be money well spent.

the fel-pro's that come in a standard 318/360 rebuild kit are .054" thick compressed. if your pistons are the (IIRC) spec .018" out of the hole, that would leave .036" quench, which is tight, but OK
