I had a cracked tailshaft housing on my big block 727. I just recieved a new housing today from CRT. My question is, how does it install? I have been fighting with it for about 45 minutes on my back under the Dak.. It seems the park rod isn't letting the housing line up to let the large bearing lock ring to slip into the bearing groove completely.. Are there any install tricks that I'm not knowing or do I keep trying to fight with it til it slips in... It's not very fun and the Nats are coming up QUICK..
Sounds like the park rod end is getting jammed instead of finding it's way. You also may be fighting with the fact that the park gear needs to be turned a bit to allow the pawl to drop. If you are working on your back, you may want to try to roll the truck a bit then see if it will go. If that doesn't work just pull the valve body with park rod attached, install the tail housing, then put the VB back on. You may find it's a bit easier to do it this way.

I can twist the output shaft a little bit at a time. I'd rather not have to pull the tranny pan as I have new Amsoil Synthetic in the trans. I had the housing on with about an 1/8" gap between it and the trans case. I noticed the top of the gasket was twisted and backed of the housing. I can't get it as close now. I guess I keep trying it the way I have been then?? The truck on jackstands with the d-shaft off.
When you decide to quit, THAT is the moment when you would've succeeded..

To late to be useful this time but if you need to do it again for any reason shift the trans into 1st (assuming std pattern VB) that will push the park rod rearward enough so you can deal with getting it in the park pawl before the tailshaft gets close to hitting everything else...
good advice right there .
