Hi all I am in the middle of setting up the gears in my 489 diff. This is my first time doing this by myself so I need a little help diagnosing my gear pattern. I think that I might need a littl more pinion depth. I set the pinion to the depth marked on the pinion gear, but it seems off to me. What is needed to be done here.
Thanks

Your depth into the gear don't look bad, but your pinion needs to be set deeper. You want your pattern in the center of the ring gear.

You need to re-size your pictures smaller.

Are you using the crush sleeve or the eliminator?

Did you use a shim at all?

I am using a solid spacer, and has .029 shims. Preload is set at 22 in/lb, the instructions ask for 24 in/lb but 22 is the closest I can get.

You are going to want to shim some more to get the pinion into the ring gear further.

I think I have you going the wrong way, it looks like it too deep. I had to look at the pic again. If the pinion is drawn back it should get you in the center of the ring gear.

Here's mine that I did. My first one as well. It's probably not perfect, but it runs flawlessly. No noise or problems.
