The '71 Challenger 440 6 pack I got last year obviously never got driven much after it was restored 20 years ago. Paperwork I got with the car showing repairs done a few years ago to get the car roadworthy mentioned rust in the gas tank, which wasn't repaired then. I don't own a trailer, so unlike the previous owners, I actually need to be able to drive this thing! I found the fuel pump was bad last weekend and replaced it Saturday, though I need to restore the entire fuel system I think. Right now there is a fuel line up to the pump, a vapor seperator, and from there to the carbs. A fuel filter is installed prior to the pump. I'm trying to figure out what I need to get to do the job, and the shop manual isn't clear on some things: -Where does the fuel filter go, or is there even supposed to be one, does the seperator act as a fuel filter also? -There is a nipple on the bottom of the seperator which is capped, I assume a line is attached to it, does it get routed to the gas tank or? -There is a supposed to be a line coming up the passenger inner fender with a bracket toward the top mounted in a notch in the upper fender, where a rubber hose connects from the line to the breather. I assume this line goes back to the fuel tank? For my shopping list, I need a new gas tank, full line set (Fine Lines?) their bracket set, rubber hose for the breather/vent line connection, gasket for the filler neck, anything else? I'm hoping to reuse the old sender as it seems to work accurately and I have heard people complaining the new senders you buy never are accurate?

First off. If your old sender is good. DON'T replace it! The repops are terrible. Some dont seal properly and pretty much all of them are off by a fair amount. They even use a crummy plastic float. The OE one is superior in all respects.
That out of the way...
Here is how that fuel system is laid out.
-You should have a 3 nipple style Valve cover breather can on the R/S. The large outlet goes to the baseplate of the air cleaner. The smaller one goes to the bowl vent on the center carb and the smallest one connects to the hard line on the pass fender.
-The fuel line is bundled into 3 pcs. Two go along the R/S rail to the fuel pump area and the third one runs up to the top of the inner fender on the r/s. The places like Fine Lines offer these correct lines.
- The fuel vapor seperator is actually the filter. It has a tab that attaches to the front most fuel pump attaching bolt. The Main heavy fuel line goes right into the inlet side of the pump, The outlet of the pump will have a short curved piece of line that allows it to connect to rhe inlet side of the seperator via a short piece of 5/16" hose. The 1/4" hard line that is bundled with the main 3/8 line just connects to the smaller vapor port on the bottom of the seperator. Then one short piece joins a 5/16 hard line to the six pack fuel tee.

Mike covered the front pretty well other than the fact the separator isn't a filter.. The filters are in the carb inlets, adding a real filter like was done on your car isn't a bad idea....
At the rear the sending unit, I agree don't change is to the current junk.. But it should have two nipples, a 3/8" for the fuel supply to the front & a 1/4" return from the vapor separator... If it doesn't I'd solder in a second line, easy to do, if you don't feel up to it a radiator shop can easily handle it... The tube only goes a couple inches inside the tank so the fuel is returned to the tank... The tank should have four lines exiting on the right side going to the second vapor separator in the trunk, there will be five tubes sticking down behind the right wheel well... The four lines from the fuel tank plus the line from the crankcase breather up front attach to those tubes...

Thanks for the fast replies guys! One thing I am still not 100% clear on, is the second line to the vapor seperator. In the attached picture of the barrelcuda's engine, it looks like a rubber hose going to it, is there a hard line coming from the tank, and a short length of rubber hose then that connects it the nipple on the seperator? IIRC there are some extra outlets on my sender that are capped off, so I think it is the right sender. This car was supposedly raced back in the day with a different engine, It looks like when the car was restored, someone made up fuel lines that work but passed on correctly restoring the vapor return components of the system.

Like Mike mentioned there should be three steel lines bundled together that run front to rear, two go to the fuel pump/fuel tank, supply & return... The third line goes to the breather on the engine & the vapor separator in the rear...

Yep...Everything is covered alright... When I restore cars the fuel system is one thing that I make sure EVERYTHING gets replaced. I've never had trouble with new sending units, but I guess anything is possible. I would order all the lines from Fine Lines and the tank from Quanta.

And your T/A would use a 5/16" sender with a single line... 440, 440-6 & 426 Hemi got a 3/8" sender with 1/4" return....

You live a blessed life..
There are thread constantly about fuel gauge reads this that or the other but nowhere near what the amount of fuel in the tank should.... I've dealt with it on a few cars.... My general suggestion is to have the original sender rewound/rebuilt ...
Who offers this service ?

Guy I talked to on the phone at Fine Lines said only hemi's got a 3/8" main fuel line, the rest had 5/16". I just wanted to double check and make sure that is not accurate, my 440 should have a 3/8" main fuel line right?
don't know about 701 e bodies but 69 B bodies with 440's got 3/8 main lines so I can't see the 6pk in later years not having it either , only 440 car I know of that got a 5/16 line from the factory was the 69 A12 cars .

He's wrong. Hemi and 440+6 engines had 3/8 fuel lines.

All 68-69 440's (including A12's) had a 3/8" sender and a 5/16" fuel line. 70-up got the 3/8" sender and fuel line. All had a vap. sep. with a 1/4" return line.
