I was wondering what is reasonable for max HP and Torque Levels for the street on a 440 6 Pack build and if so what is needed to do so. The motor is going into a 1970 RR. Looking to cruise and upon drag it.

Will you be using the stock stroke?

This is just over 700HP with a roller cam in the 700 lift range. and IMO , it's to much cam or not enough gear( it's a 4.10 Dana)

It wants RPM'S

I believe 3.75" is universally considered stock.

Wow, that is a lot of cam and gear for the street.

Reasonable to me ended up being 493 inch motor with a mild .550 lift hydraulic cam'd, mechanical carb'd motor putting out a very streetable, very low-maintenance 684 hp/682 ft lbs of torque at 5500 rpm; through a 4 speed and 3.54 geared Dana getting 9 city and 12+ highway at 70mph.

Should do a bit better on the highway with Jamie's 5-speed. I can't imagine running lower gears in it, with over 500 ft lbs of torque at 2000 rpm it just doesn't need it.

I would love to know the specs on that build if you don't mind.

mine seems to run pretty good with goos street manners, shooting for 11.5-7 next weekend. .030 over 440, h-beam rods, ross pistions (11.19:1), Ported Stage VI heads, comp cams 588 solid roller, stock 6-pack with 70 jets, 35 squitters, puprle springs, Fluidampr, headers, 3800 stall, TA man valve body and 3.91's. Car flat out blows the M&H's off thru 2 gears...I'm sure I'll have to do some track tuning but it idles at 1000 and pulls about 7-9 of vacuum and crusies at 17. I'm sure if you have deep pockets you could easily get 650 or more. Chris (440Pursuit) had a nice 509 cammed 440 set-up running 11.80's in a 67 GTX.

Looks like I was wrong,I thought the cam was in the 700 " lift range. But after looking back thru this thread,It appears to be more in the high 600" lift range.
Idle quality seemed the best about 1050-1100 rpm range. Anything less and it got kinda choppy, almost acted like it was starting to load up.
And anything less than 40 mph in 4th gear, and it was on the cam to much and got kind of jerky.
To be honest, I only drove it maybe 3 or 4 miles total before taking it home. But I could tell it was going to be a monster and it really wanted to be in the upper rpm range.
I can say it sounds REALLY REALLY good . My hats off to the builder.

Good post but a bit of a trick question, its pretty clear the 3.75 stroke has been set but there are so many other possible combos.

I would ask myself why on the 3.75 stroke?? In small blocks they love the 4.00 and 4.250 stroke so I figure that would bounce over to stroked BB six packs.

Na/Spray...if the 3.75 is the only "rule" I bet there are some really strong combos around.

Wow! Now I have much more to think about. I am looking at 600hp 600 torque or there about. As far as manifold, Cams etc. I started this thread to see what works best in this application from you guys that have been there and done that. All the suggestions will help greatly as I am in the Military and never have the garage space and tools (cherry picker etc.) on hand to constantly build or maintain, I always have to be methodical and lay that stuff on ahead of time. I like the examples always appreciate any and all advice.

Also I will be running a 727 and I am on the fence as to what gear ratio to go with. @ GTX...Saw on your build thread that someone was questioning the reliabillity of the stock carbs, have they given you any issues?
Thanks

I didn't build the motor or drive it much once completed( it' was a customers car and has already been returned to him ) .

In the little bit I did drive it, they were not a problem. BUT, I never hammered into it either.

The carbs themselves had been heavily modified from stock. Including an aftermkt metering plate on the center carb , aftermkt base plates on the end carbs and the air horns on all 3 have been removed.
All in the name of performace and adjustability.

The engine had been fully dialed in and dynoed before I got it so I have my doubts the carbs will be of any issue.

This setup is 591hp at the flywheel and is fun on the street

jcb426, I would really love to know the specs of your build including parts used work performed, head specs might be a little much to ask but that is where you can make or brake a combo. PM me if you don't want it public and I will keep me mouth shut. I promise. Really.

Thanks
