Will an Autometer tach, most any model I guess, hook up to a MSD 7AL -2 without any adaptor boxes? Will it work okay if you plug it in to the plug on the box?

you can try, but I would bet you need the adapter. I did on a 6AL

I was afraid of that. Actually I haven't started the motor yet, wanted all the goodies in place before hand. How about a Sun tach? I guess I have a hard time understanding why MSD or any others make a box that you need an adaptor to make it work. The almighty dollar again, I suppose.

I have an autometer tach plugged into the 6AL box on my pickup without a tach adapter.

thank you, I'll give it a try without it.

if you wire it normally, I think you'll need the adapter (when wired to the coil to sense the sparks) but most if not all MSD boxes have a special plug for a tach, if you wire it straight to that, it should work fine. that's how I did mine and didn't have any problems on a 6AL

yes, there is place to plug in a tach on the box. I've never run a MSD box before so this is new territory for me. Just wanted to make sure I didn't need the adaptor. Work permitting, I wanted to start the new engine in the next few weeks.
