Ran, after reading this, I have a thought for you. Since your 1 1/8" is already "fitted" to the van, there may be a rebuilder that could bore that one to 1 1/4" and stuff the rebuild guts for that size into the casting. Unless the casting is real thin somewhere (which would be a separate concern), another 1/16" in each direction should be fine!
