Could get away with (1) 12" piece, but will make one non-progressive just in case I want to change it later

1/4-28 is fine thread. You can use 5/16" OD tubing that has a 3/16" or smaller ID, drill out with a #3 or 7/32 bit, and tap your 1/4-28 thread.
