too bad I punted the Carter Comp series 625 on my mild 340 swinger for a 750DP and went from 14.teens to 13.80. A holley is a much better carb and for what you have I think you'd be much hapier w/ a holley. Any car is going to need tuning. Holley have much more to play with so I guess that's why some people don't like them.
