This is correct the early 87-90 dakotas with the 5 lug pattern use the same spindles as the 91-96 dakotas. The rear ends are also the same width (as long as you have the same rear, I believe the 91-96 dakota had two different rears one for the 4 cylinder and one for the v-6 and v-8.) so the axle swap is just matching it up to the right axle.
