Me too, back in the day from '68 to the mid '70's I worked 11pm to 7am (3rd shift as they called it) five days a week. It was actually better than working 3pm - 11pm or 3:30pm-12am (2nd shift) for a young guy as all you could do once you turned 21 was close the bar at 2am with the rest of the drinking co-workers and then sleep it off until 1pm or 2pm the next day and get up and go back to work. Never had enough seniority to hold a steady 1st shift of 7am - 3pm so I volunteered for 3rd shift when they had it which was most of the time. A funny thing happened one Saturday morning around 7:15 am sitting in my '69 Road Runner tired and not really knowing what was going on at a traffic light and sort of feeling like that cat.

My job was a 'third shift' too. I loved it at the time because Friday morning started my weekend and Sunday night started the week, so it felt like I had a three-day weekend.

From what I was told and what I've seen, 8 hr overnight shifts have pretty much gone the way of rotary phones. One of the first jobs I had here in TX was a 12hr overnight, that SUCKED. Between drive time and them expecting you to stay an hour over to prepare for the next shift, I was looking at a 15-16 hr work day. I didn't last a week. I won't even consider a swing shift.
