Pretty sure what you are talking about is a "surge" tank. The radiator lower than the engine creates an issue. That tank allows Tony to fill the engine with water and not have any air pockets.

It’s a 1.5 quart surge tank . If you look close , it’s fed on the bottom from the block , and there is a bung welded on the upper side to feed the radiator. There is a pressure transducer to data log coolant pressure (keep tabs on head gasket life)
Yes Al is also correct , you need a “high” spot to bleed air out of the cooling system . It solves a lot of issues
