I find it hard to believe in this day and age that it costs that much

Sorry, that's not how it works. The guys going through all the trouble of making this product for a VERY small, niche market, will only do it if they can expect to make a reasonable profit.

The only hope of the price going down is if they started to sell a lot more of them--not less.

If the batteries stop selling--they aren't going to lower the price--they simply stop making them and earn their living another way.
