i never thought this question through, thinking it would be possibly easy [?] to do if one had the two different chargers side by side.

as it seems both chargers work as they are designed, and both seem to have reasonable reviews, it looks like the comparisons come down to price and longevity.
as the desulfate chargers are somewhat of a new process [?] available to the general public, i'm guessing it will be a "time will tell" process to see which will last/work for the longest time.
i will bet they don't last as long as my old style charger, which still works great.
